Grub Damage In Your Lawn

Grub damage in your lawn

Grubs are something that everyone more than likely notices at one point in time or another. They are small bugs that can dwell in your yard and will come off as completely harmless to most people. However, as a homeowner, you should always be on the lookout for grub damage in your lawn and never let it go untreated.

Common Types Of Grub Damage In Lawns

Grubs look like small white C-shaped creatures that have soft bodies and legs beside their heads. The damages they cause are noticeable if you know what signs to look for. One of these signs is dead grass. However, this can also be a sign of many other problems in late summer and early fall. White grubs will kill off your grass by chewing at the roots, and essentially cutting off all the water and nutrients that your lawn needs to grow. Your grass can appear to look brown, irregularly shaped, and it won’t change colors regardless of how much water it receives. This means if you irrigate your lawn routinely, and it is still turning brown, that makes a grub infestation your prime suspect.

Other Characteristics Of Grubs

  • Grubs are the larvae of various beetle species, one of them being the Japanese beetle and widely known as June beetles.
  • Grub larvae turn into pupae in the late spring and start their hatching season in the summer. This means that by mid-June you might notice adult beetles coming from the ground, and feeding on the vegetation in your lawn.
  • If you spot this sign, that means your lawn is more susceptible to a grub problem. Additionally, seeing any extra critter roaming about in your yard can be a sign of grubs.
  • Armadillos and Skunks will often dig up a yard looking for grubs. They can actually smell the slight methane emissions the grubs let off, and will dig the grubs up to eat.
  • Grubs are a popular treat for many grub killers like raccoons, skunks, birds, and more. Thus, making your yard a buffet if you are experiencing grub control issues. These extra critters coming onto your yard can cause further lawn damage, making your problem that much bigger, and likely costly.
  • Lastly, you can check to see if you have a grub problem by using the carpet-roll method.
  • For this method, go to the edge of the brown grass where the grass is still green, and tug on it. If the grass peels back like a doormat, you will see the grubs under it in most cases. If the grass doesn’t peel back and breaks, you may have another type of lawn issue.
