The Importance of a Fall Pre-Emergent

The importance of a fall pre-emergent

Throughout Summer, we toil to keep weeds, bugs, and heat from destroying North Texas lawns. Now with cooler temperatures on the horizon, we are preparing for another seasonal change. During the Autumn months, we’ll see perennial plants going dormant, Summer annuals seeding, and cool weather weeds beginning to grow. These weeds are a nuisance and can affect your grass next year. It is for this reason that lawn care companies recommend a fall pre-emergent weed control application during the very late Summer or early Fall.

What Weeds Are Targeted?

With a Fall pre-emergent application, we target annual weeds that germinate in late Fall, grow in Winter, and seed in the Spring. The seeds will then lie dormant through the scorching Summer. We will target over 50 types of weeds including:

  • Winter Grasses
  • Thistle
  • Henbit
  • Chickweed
  • Dandelions
  • Clover

Timing Is Everything

It should be noted that a pre-emergent will not destroy the seeds. The purpose of the pre-emergent is to stop the seeds from germinating. That is why the timing of the weed control application is critical. If you start to see weeds growing, a pre-emergent will not work. At that point, you must switch to a reactive weed control plan by using a post-emergent.

Our lawn care company’s goal is to apply the Fall pre-emergent application a few weeks before germination. Unfortunately, due to the inconsistency of Texas weather, it’s hard to know exactly when germination will take place. As a result, Chorbie has chosen to use a liquid product that protects the lawn for a longer period than granular products. If you happen to see weeds growing in your lawn, know that our technicians will use post-emergents to kill those weeds.

Reflecting back on Benjamin Franklin’s quote, we highly recommend a preventative approach to weed control. In the end, you will save time, money, and the overall density of your lawn. Contact us today for more details.
