Winter Weed Control In The DFW Metroplex

Winter Weed Control In The DFW Metroplex

Homeowners know that weeds can spoil the look of your lawn, and even your landscape, if not treated. Weeds are more than just a bad eyesore, also. They can steal nutrients that would have otherwise been used to support another plant. This is especially important for homeowners in the DFW metroplex as weeds don’t stop growing in the winter. For this reason, knowing proper winter weed control can be of great help and benefit to keep your yard healthy and beautiful.

Types Of Weeds

Having the proper knowledge of what type of weeds you are dealing with is important when combating winter weeds. The types of weeds you’ll see in your lawn are chickweed, henbit, annual bluegrass, and lawn burweed. It is best to catch weeds when they are small, so the sooner you act the better. Winter weeds can also be a sign that your lawn is weak and needs better care. We know this is true since the weeds were allowed to germinate in the first place.

Perennial & Annual Weed Control

Weeds are categorized as either a perennial weed or annual weed. Perennial weeds are reproduced from established roots that have not been killed off. Annual weeds return yearly and need to be taken care of most likely every year. Different types of actions can be taken for various types of weeds and to get rid of them. We will jump into herbicides and which to apply when you figure out what you are dealing with.

Combating Weeds

After you have identified the weeds in your lawn, you can decide which herbicide to use for weed control. The only time you do not need a herbicide is when you hand pull the weeds straight from the soil. It’s important to note that this can take a significant amount of physical effort. Hand pulling is a waste of time if the weeds are too far along, as well. You will need a post-emergent herbicide in the case of mature weeds that are already showing.

Contact Herbicides & Systemic Herbicides

  • When facing annual weeds use contact herbicides and apply it directly on the leaves and stem, within a few days you will see results.
  • If it is a perennial weed, use a systemic herbicide. Systemic herbicides are dual-action, they kill the plant on contact and then move throughout the whole plant to kill the stem and root.

Selective & Non-Selective Herbicide

  • Two other forms of herbicide include selective and non-selective each with their own duty and responsibility regarding weed control.
  • A selective herbicide does what it says, it will kill only a specific weed while not causing harm to other non-specified plants in your yard.
  • You should be very careful with non-selective herbicides, on the other hand. This treatment will kill all the plants within its vicinity so be sure to take caution when applying.

Before Treating Weeds

When you apply a herbicide make sure the soil is moist before doing so. This allows the treatment to seep into the soil and kill the weed’s root system. It is not recommended to do a herbicide treatment during a drought or dry spell. Lastly, always read the label and manufacturer’s instructions for every product for the best weed control results. Especially herbicides, this way you can ensure you do not cause damage to your yard.
