Six Factors for a Healthy Lawn


Sunlight is probably the most important factor for having a healthy lawn. You need anywhere from four to twelve hours of sunlight a day, depending on the type of grass you have.

Your lawn care technician will let you know how much sunlight is necessary for the grass you wish to grow. They can also make suggestions, such as trimming trees or choosing an alternate grass type based on how much sunlight the lawn receives.


Water is a vital component to your lawn’s health. Though important, it can also be damaging if too much water collects in low lying areas. Keep in mind, excess water is either lost or absorbed by weeds and other plants that would compete with your grass. Also, extra water left on the lawn could lead to disease development, or in some cases, drown the grass.

We always recommend that you water your lawn in a way that allows excess water to dry up between waterings. In other words, areas of the lawn that receive more shade throughout the day require less watering than areas in full sunlight. Always be on the lookout for areas that do not drain properly and make sure to correct when possible.


Soil can be one of the most challenging parts of having a healthy lawn. Here in Texas, there is predominantly clay soil. Clay soil can be challenging because each grain of soil is around .002 mm in size. In comparison, sand has a grain size ranging from .05 mm to 2 mm in size.

Because of this, clay soils can compact and restrict the flow of water, oxygen, and nutrients into the ground. When this happens your grass is not only unable to receive the nutrients but also struggles to build thick dense roots needed to support a healthy lawn. If this is the case, we may recommend an aeration to help loosen your soil.


Regardless of the type of grass you have in your lawn, it will need to be fed properly to maintain its strength and growth. With our lawn care program, you can rest assured that we will use the proper blend of fertilizer needed to maintain your lawn’s health. Your lawn care professional will select the appropriate type of fertilizer based on your lawn’s current condition during each visit to either improve the density of the lawn or maintain the healthy thick grass you already have.


Mowing your lawn has numerous benefits. Mowing regularly allows:

  • Equal distribution of nutrients and water;
  • Promotion of an overall stronger lawn health;
  • A clean and manicured look.

When mowing strongest and healthier shoots survive the cut and then proliferate to cause a more uniform and stronger lawn. Clippings from mowing also add nutrients back into the soil. We recommend having a consistent mowing schedule, usually weekly. Also, always allow the clippings to fall onto the lawn. We only recommend bagging the clipping for certain grass types, like Zoysia, or if there is a thatch build up we are trying to reverse.


The final and sometimes most challenging item on our list is competition. Competition is defined as an obstacle that will limit your grass from reaching its full potential. The main competitive forces your lawn is up against are:

  • Insects – grubs, chinch bugs, armyworms.
  • Diseases – various bacterial and fungal infections.
  • Weeds – any plant growing in an area that it is not wanted. This can include normal turf grass that is not desirable.
  • Animals – rabbits, who eat the lawn; armadillos and opossum, that dig for insects; pets, like dogs who dig up the lawn, or use the bathroom in the same location.
