5 Signs Of Roach Infestation In Your Home

5 Signs Of Roach Infestation In Your Home

There is all manner of pests that may settle in and around your home, but there are few as loathed as cockroaches. These insects can be particularly problematic as they stay largely hidden and can grow their numbers while their presence remains unknown. This means that homeowners must be aware of the tell-tale signs that roaches leave behind, indicating their existence to a watchful eye.

What Attracts Roaches?

Cockroaches are attracted to our homes for many different reasons. Commonly, they are drawn to food that has been left out, crumbs, or dirty dishes in the sink. Moist areas are something they love to be around, as well. They tend to hide in small cracks and crevices, mostly emerging at night which can make them more difficult to spot.

Indicators Of Roaches In A Home

For starters, you may not see roaches in your home. However, there are still strong indicators that can clue you into their presence.

  • 1. Know Where to Look – Roaches have a few preferred hiding places within homes. Look for them in kitchen cupboards and cabinets, pipework, and in laundry rooms. They may live in basements along corners or cracks in wood or concrete, or in bathrooms near the toilet or bathtub. Some even have the ability to survive in cooler areas like drains and pipes beneath porches and decking.
  • 2. Look for Roach Droppings – Roach droppings are a sure indicator of an infestation in the home. These droppings resemble black pepper or coffee grounds and can harbor potentially dangerous bacteria. If encountered, clean with caution and immediately and thoroughly wash your hands.
  • 3. Look for Roach Eggs – Much like droppings, roach eggs can also often be spotted in an infested home. These eggs are encased in capsules, known as ootheca. They resemble small black, brown, or tan pills ranging in size from ¼ to ½ inch long. They can often be found near food sources or in areas of humidity.
  • 4. Look for Shed Skin – As roaches grow, they must shed and leave behind their old skin just like a snake. By the time they reach adulthood, they will typically have shed their skin five to eight times. Spotting these discarded skins around your home is a clear sign of a problem.
  • 5. Smell for Roaches – It might sound odd, but your nose can also hint at a roach problem. These pests can leave a foul or musty smell in the air, and as their numbers begin to grow, so too will the odor.
